Ever wondered what goes into creating the climbs you love?
This hands-on Route Setting Taster gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how problems are built, tested, and refined in a commercial climbing wall.
Designed for competent climbers, this course is perfect if you're curious about route setting or considering it as a career. With a strong focus on safety and real-world practices, you'll learn how to create engaging climbs while gaining insight from experienced setters.
Important booking information
As part of this course, all participants are required to complete a course agreement during the booking process. For this reason, bookings must be made by the individual attending the course and not on behalf of someone else.
To ensure each participant can complete the required agreement themselves, bookings are limited to one person per booking.
What you'll learn:
- Essential safety practices for route setting
- How to place and use volumes effectively
- Setting beginner-friendly blocs (V intro–V1)
- Insider techniques and “dark arts” of setting
- Building and refining problems
- Testing, adjusting, and improving your climbs
By the end of the session, you'll have set and refined your own blocs, and gained a deeper appreciation for the craft behind every climb on the wall.
Prerequisites: Anyone over the age of 18 who has completed their registration form can book onto the course, provided they have a minimum of 6 months of climbing experience and can regularly climb a minimum of grade V3. This is to ensure participants get the most out of the course.
Please arrive 15 minutes early, as the course starts promptly at 8 am. If you are more than 30 minutes late, you will be unable to join the course.
